about deutschland99 by h-ray heine "a good traveller has no fixed plans and is not intent upon arriving" The well-known phrase out of the Tao served as the underlying idea for deutschland99 -- to keep a digital travel journal without any specific ideas as to the final look and shape of the work. To use a selection of digital recording devices, from audio to avi video to still images and text, and to let the journal take its own shape. The work is filled with many personal references since it is personal journal of a journey back to my old hometown of Krefeld, Germany, where I went to highschool and had my first shows as a young artist in the late seventies. But the scope of the work is larger than that of a personal record. It is an experiment that explores the use of digital media and the web to document the experience of a particular journey. deutschland99 is not based
on a linear narrative. Elements are connected without much concern
for logical or narrative order. The different images weave together
and create a digital reflection of the analog events and experiences.
